Ian has recently moved to Richmond VA to attend the School of the Arts at VCU. He is in the Sculpture department, and he likes it very much. More later. This blog is in active inactivity.

So, it turns out the tipi adventure is not over, in fact, it has just begun. On January 24, 2009 a bus was purchased. This bus a 1991 International 3800, previously owned by the USMC, will carry Tent(ative) around the country and possibly out of the country. Sarah Witt and I are in the process of creating proposal packages and finding sponsors to support the expeditions. We hope to visit summer camps, year round schools, arts organizations, and public spaces.

The bus itself will be converted to WVO (waste vegetable oil), a sustainable fuel. This process is simple but costly. The conversion is in the $2000 range and requires filters, heaters, and extra fuel tanks. The price is worth every penny. If you are able, we are accepting donations at this time. The bus will bring hours of educational potential. DIY workshops everywhere we go. If you have any suggestions of where to go, please!! send them.

It's a cold month, dreary and quiet, rainy and miserable, and it's nearly here. What a drag. But it's also beautiful; nature is preparing for a new year of growth and the birds are scratching the exposed soil for their morning meal. A metaphor for the soul. I 'm going through this cycle too. Tipi's were great, school was tedious both are over and I sit contemplating a new direction. Where to go what to do? Transition mode is here (depressing but necessary.)

We successfully brought back 3 sets of bamboo poles.
November 14-16 the Tipi's be in Rockingham County at the Primative Ceramics Firing.

The Friday before last Dixon , Desmond and I set out to produce a multimedia wall piece for the local found objects exhibit. Here is a little preview of what can be seen at The Gallery in Reidsville. Thank you Tara and Brad and everyone in Reidsville for putting up with late work and the smell of linseed oil. The show will be up until the 25th of October.

Today I took the tipi to Bethany Community Middle School. We arrived at 8:30am to set up camp. Between 11:30 and 2:30 the Tipi was shown to 4 different classes. We, meaning the students, teachers, and I discussed a number of issues related to the tipi including the environment, the history of tipis, post-modern art in 2008, and how I made the tipi.

This is a drawing of the tipi pictured below. It is drawn according to the traditional Souix patterns found in The Indian Tipi: Its History, Construction, and Use by Reginald and Gladys Laubin. Drawings like these are good for records and are essential when planning a tipi construction.

TENT(ative) is a current project I have been collaborating on with my partner Sarah Witt. Composed of a 12 tipi village in Spartenburg, SC, the installation deals with the excessive waste of America and how these materials can be transformed into beautiful structures.
