This is a drawing of the tipi pictured below. It is drawn according to the traditional Souix patterns found in The Indian Tipi: Its History, Construction, and Use by Reginald and Gladys Laubin. Drawings like these are good for records and are essential when planning a tipi construction.

TENT(ative)

TENT(ative) is a current project I have been collaborating on with my partner Sarah Witt. Composed of a 12 tipi village in Spartenburg, SC, the installation deals with the excessive waste of America and how these materials can be transformed into beautiful structures.

Artist Statement

Art emerges with the desire to create. Driven by an aboriginal instinct, it is everything from daily habits to communication. The practice of art may contain, but does not need a concept or rationalization. It needs only action. Art can be depiction of subconscious images seen earlier that day. Or it could be a layered ongoing process resulting in multiple duplicates of an object, like a tool. These depictions and sculptures can have a purpose. The need for tools is the origin of creativity and ingenuity. Needs are desires. I see art as a desire to resolve the questions we have about life. When we make Tipis there is a layered concept that drives the creation. It is a concept that is mutual with other human beings and ancient cultures. The “take only what you need” concept is juxtaposed against modern waste materials. These elegant archaic structures of the past were created with the regards to resourcefulness, function and beauty, but they did not have attached political implications of our Tipi. Within our structure there is the desire to make a home that reflects the environment of the 21^st century. Is it an answer to the problem or an attempt to solve it?
